Administrative / biographical background:

The Marketing Department was responsible for advising the National Coal Board and carrying out its decisions on marketing policy as well as negotiating major sales agreements with customers such as the Central Electricity Generating Board, the British Steel Corporation and other major coal users. It also had a regional marketing organisation and supplied the NCB membership of the Coal Utilisation Council.

In the late 1950s the Marketing Department took over certain sections of the Carbonisation Department, which dealt with the marketing of coke and other products, but later on these sections were transferred to the Coal Products Division.
