This series contains records of the Southern Africa Department. The records relate to the South African High Commission Territories of Basutoland, Bechuanaland and Swaziland. They cover, principally, constitutional reform, development projects and their funding, political parties in the individual territories, political refugees from South Africa, land tenure and criminal justice.

The series includes files from the BBS series which would otherwise be found in DO 157.

Administrative / biographical background:

The Colonial Office assumed responsibility for the three South African High Commission Territories (Bechuanaland, Basutoland, and Swaziland) in 1960 following the re-organisation of government responsibilities dealing with new or soon to be independent Commonwealth countries and the subsequent transfer of responsibility for these three particular territories from the Commonwealth Relations Office to the Colonial Office in 1961. Responsibility remained with the Colonial Office until August 1966 when the Commonwealth Office was formed.
