Eighteen letters with enclosures concerning a new prison at Devonport. Two letters from John Lillifant, Chairman of the Visiting Justices of the Devon County Prisons, regarding plans for the improvements of the buildings; a letter from Thomas Woollcombe, Town Clerk, regarding the proposed joint prison for the boroughs of Plymouth and Devonport and requesting George Grey not to sanction the site without further inquiry; two letters from Woollcombe reporting on the proposed plans for the borough prison; a letter from Woollcombe transmitting a petition from the council of Devonport for a separate court of quarter sessions[petition not enclosed]; a letter from Woollcombe transmitting a draft of the agreement with the county justices for the custody and maintenance of prisoners; five letters from Woollcombe regarding the proposed grant of quarter sessions, one letter enclosing a resolution made at a meeting of the visiting justices at Devon County Gaol and a letter from J Jebb; a letter from Woollcombe transmitting a resolution of the Magistrates of Devon, regarding a grant of quarter sessions; a letter from Woollcombe transmitting a proposal grant of separate quarter sessions and accommodation at gaol; a letter from John G Perry stating that it is not in accordance with the acts of parliament to give £3000 for a prison at Devonport; a letter from John Phillipps at Whitehall to the town clerk of Devonport rejecting his request for £3000; a letter from Woollcombe transmitting a plan of a site for a borough prison; a letter from Drake, Deputy Clerk of the Peace for Devonport, transmitting a resolution to the proposed contract for the maintenance of the Devonport Gaol.
