Administrative / biographical background:

The Federated Malay States were formed in 1885 and was part of the British colony, the Straits Settlements. The Malay States were under Japanese occupation, 1942-1945 and British military occupation, 1945-1946. After the occupations, a new Union of Malaya was formed.
