Mr Bromley's summary, for texts (see 8979 and 8983). Western Europe: Kesselring orders on Apr 7 that Harz Massif was to be made blocking position of first order, defended by a few determined men, the Allied advance there could be made very costly, thus obtaining time for new measures; popular demonstrations occurred in front of town hall at Gerolzhofen on Apr 7, arrests were ordered; German High Command orders defence of Schweinfurt, of vital importance to war economy, to be conducted far from the town so as to keep important ball-bearing works away from effects of Allied action, demolitions were only to be undertaken by close agreement with General Kammler; on Apr 5 Army Group H was unable to protect northern Holland and prevent Allied advance into North German Plain unless it received forces from north capable of attacking, Army Group gives its 3 possible options with its available troops; V-1 variant with lighter warhead and increased range of 500 kilometres to be developed. |
