Administrative / biographical background: |
Newfoundland became one of Britain's earliest colonies in 1583. It became a self governing colony in 1855 and came under a British appointed commission of government in 1934. In 1949 it became a province of Canada. Newfoundland was administered through the Colonial Office until 1925 when it became a responsibility of the Dominions Office. |
