Title: | Government gazettes from the colonies |
Description: |
Contains government gazettes which were the official newspapers produced by most colonies and dominions. Although the content of the gazettes varies between colonies, generally they provide information on a variety of subjects including the economy, population, government, sanitation, communications, meteorology and crime. They include minutes and proclamations by the governor; notices of appointments; the texts of ordinances and various notices, for example of sales of land and of shipping intelligence; calls for tenders and advertisements of trade marks. Also included are notices from particular bodies, such as the Currency Commissioners and reports of the proceedings of municipal Councils. Other statistical reports may be contained which have information on births and deaths, the incidence of disease, and weather observations. The gazettes may also include supplements, for example the colonial weekly police circulars The Hue and Cry. Africa Central and Southern Africa
