Description:

Medical journal of HMS Egmont, from 21 November 1873 to 8 December 1874 by Pierce Mansfield, Staff Surgeon, during which time the ship was employed in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil and SE Coast of America Station.

Folio 1: Instructions on completing the journal and nosological tables.

Folios 2-3: case no 1, Mr Walter Balfour Ogilvy, aged 31, Lieutenant Royal Navy; sick or hurt, cerebral congestion and gastritis; put on sick list 23 December 1873, invalided 1 February 1874, discharged 7 February 1874 to RMS Fiber for passage to England.

Folios 3-4: case no 2, Mr Herbert H Gain, aged 44, Paymaster; sick or hurt, debility, albumenuria (enlarged prostrate), he was invalided twice before from this station - from HMS Stromboli ; again from the East Indian Station and from HMS Satelite, had 24 years foreign service, 8 of which in the tropics. He was reported by Staff Surgeon William Edney to have complained of rheumatism and climatic debility; put on sick list 20 February 1874, invalided 23 February 1873, discharged 25 February 1873 to RMS [Cuzeo?] for passage to England.

Folios 4-5: case no 3, Richard Elliott, aged 24, Warrant Officer's Srevant; sick or hurt, acute hepatitis? Bilious remittent fever; put on sick list 27 February 1874, died 4 March 1874 at 7.30 pm, [including autopsy report].

Folio 5: case no 4, William Toon alias Rudkin, aged 40, Private Royal Marine; sick or hurt, disease of heart organic; put on sick list 2 April 1874, invalided 22 April 1874, discharged 22 April 1874 to RMS Boyne for passage to England.

Folio 6: case no 5, Benjamin Broughton, aged 22, Carpenter’s Crew; sick or hurt, bilious remittent fever (yellow malarial); put on sick list 10 May 1874, died 16 May 1874 at 5.40 pm, [including autopsy report].

Folios 6-7: case no 6, David Gaywood, aged 19, Ordinary Seaman; sick or hurt, bilious remittent fever (yellow malarial); put on sick list 10 May 1874, discharged 9 June 1874 to duty.

Folios 7-8: case no 7, Frederick Martin, aged 21, Yeoman of Signal; sick or hurt, bilious remittent fever (yellow malarial); put on sick list 11 May 1874, died 18 May 1874 at 10.34 pm, [including autopsy report].

Folio 9: case no 8, John Peckham, aged 20, Ordinary Seaman; sick or hurt, bilious remittent fever (yellow malarial); put on sick list 4 June 1874, died 8 June 1874 at 7.30 pm, [including autopsy report].

Folios 9-10: case no 9, John Hughes, aged 31, Marine; sick or hurt, bilious remittent fever (yellow malarial); put on sick list 5 June 1874, died 8 June 1874 at 3.30 pm, [including autopsy report].

Folio 10: case no 10, William Sutton, aged 19, Ordinary Seaman; sick or hurt, bilious remittent fever (yellow malarial); put on sick list 9 June 1874, died 12 June 1874 at 3.30 pm, [including autopsy report].

Folios 10-11: case no 11, Joseph Leaning, aged 30, Ship's Corporal; sick or hurt, bilious remittent fever (yellow malarial); put on sick list 13 June 1874, died 17 June 1874.

Folio 11: case no 12, James Smith, aged 19, Ordinary Seaman; sick or hurt, bilious remittent fever (yellow malarial); put on sick list 13 June 1874, died 20 June 1874.

Folio 11: case no 13, William F. Sellers, aged 23, Writer; sick or hurt, bilious remittent fever, he was put on sick list 19 August 1874, one of those confined to the ship among the 21 people retained as a 'watch' against the Surgeon recommendation, the ship having been condemned as unfit for temporary occupation…he was sent from this ship to the hired sick quarters Hospital of San [Sebasti?] under [Dr Feleio Dor Santos?] on 21 August 1874.

Folio 12: case no 14, Thomas Collins, aged 22, Armourer; sick or hurt, bilious remittent fever; put on sick list 26 October 1874, sent 28 October 1874 to hired Sick Quarters returned 4 November 1874 convalescent and prohibited from working below deck.

Folio 12: case no 15, Daniel Miller, aged 38, Yeoman of Stores; sick or hurt, bilious remittent fever; put on sick list 6 November 1874, sent 10 November 1874 to hired Sick Quarters, his convalescence was protracted by hepatitic symptoms and he was sent to the Mountains at Palmeiras for recovery.

Folio 12: case no 16, Charles Dash, aged 36, Sailmaker; sick or hurt, bilious remittent fever; put on sick list 9 November 1874, sent 10 November 1874 to hired Sick Quarters, he also had protracted convalescence and was necessary to send him to the Mountains at Palmeiras.

Folio 12: case no 17, William Williams, aged 23, Writer; sick or hurt, bilious remittent fever; put on sick list 13 November 1874, sent 15 November 1874 to hired Sick Quarters, sent to the Mountains at Palmeiras.

Folio 13: case no 18, Mr George Popplestone, aged 37, [Captain of Mast?]; sick or hurt, bilious remittent fever; put on sick list 18 November 1874, sent 18 November 1874 to hired Sick Quarters, this was the only officer attacked with this form of fever and showed the evident influence of the state of the ship...after the appearance of this outbreak, the immediate step were ordered for the clearing out & sale of the Putrescent ship Egmont.
