Description:

Medical journal of the Numa female convict ship from 14 October 1833 to 1 July 1834 by Edward F Bromley, surgeon and superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed in the conveyance of female convicts to New South Wales.

Folio 1: case no 1, Joanna Sparrow, aged 30, convict; sick or hurt, ulcer on the left leg; put on sick list 1 December 1833, discharged 22 March 1834 cured.

Folio 2: no 2, Emma Davis, aged 32, convict; sick or hurt, great pain in the side and difficulty of breathing; put on sick list 28 December 1833, discharged 10 January 1834 cured.

Folio 2: no 3, Mary Gordon, aged [?], convict; sick or hurt, great pain in the left side extending to the pit of stomach accompanied with difficulty of breathing; put on sick list 14 January 1834, discharged 20 February 1834 cured.

Folio 3: no 4, Mary Holland, aged [?], convict; sick or hurt, hemoptysis; put on sick list 17 January 1834, discharged 23 January 1834 much better.

Folio 3: no 5, Christian King; sick or hurt, cynanche tonsillaris; put on sick list 30 January 1834, discharged 8 February 1834 cured.

Folio 4: no 6, Jane Cornwall, aged [?], convict; sick or hurt, phthisis; put on sick list 19 February 1834, sent 14 June 1834 to general hospital at Sydney.

Folio 4: no 7, Mary Clifford, aged 20 months, convict; sick or hurt, marasmus; put on sick list 1 March 1834, died 30 April 1834.

Folio 5: no 8, John McFie, aged 2, son of Mary O'Brien; sick or hurt, marasmus; put on sick list 1 January 1834, died 1 June 1834.

Folio 5: no 9, Mary Ann George, born at sea, daughter of Susan George; sick or hurt, debility, three after birth a considerable degree of inflammation accompanied with tumefaction on the left thigh near the groin occasioned by the scratch of a pin in the napkin; put on sick list 14 April 1834, died 14 [March?] 1834.

Folio 6: Mary Holland brought forward from case no 4, during the warm weather this woman seems to improve, but after leaving the Cape of Good Hope she became worse and was again taken to hospital, on the 1st June she was much sunk and gradually worsen till 7th [June] when she died. On taking a post mortem examination [found] the coats of the stomach were destroyed by drink, the liver [shredded?] with hydatids, and the left kidney rather unusually large.

Folio 6: no 10, Grace Denham, aged 23, convict; sick or hurt, scrophula; put on sick list 26 March 1834, discharged 30 April 1834 cured.

Folio 7: no 11, Jane Goodwin and child; sick or hurt, syphilis preceeded by gonorrhoea, labouring under slight gonorrhoea an eruption came out on various parts of her body especially on her breasts, legs and thighs, nodes on the shins and an abscess on the left knee. Her child was from birth covered with a similar eruption which discharged very much; put on sick list 28 March 1834, this woman and her child were sent 24 June 1834 to hospital at Parramatta immediately after arrival at Sydney.

Folio 7: no 12, Olympia Edwards, aged [?]; sick or hurt, fractura os humeri, had a fall upon deck, her arm coming in contact with the fluke of the anchor considerable tumefaction immediately took place; put on sick list 24 May 1834, quite recovered when landed on1 July 1834.
