Description:

Medical journal of the Emma Eugenia, convict ship from 7 October 1837 to 24 February 1838 by Robert Wylie, surgeon and superintendent, during which time the said ship was employed in transporting 200 male prisoners from Portsmouth to Sydney.

Folio 25: Surgeon's general remarks. 200 prisoners were embarked on board the Emma Eugenia on 28 October 1837 from the hulks at Portsmouth. Most of them Englishmen from various parts of the country. The passage through the Tropics was favourable and we arrived at Sydney in the short space of 95 days, and during that period some symptoms of scurvy showed themselves but were checked with lemon juice and sugar, the solution of nitre in vinegar was also tried but not as effective as the lemon juice.
