Administrative / biographical background:

The Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas) was established on 1 April 1997 in succession to the Directorate of Fisheries Research (DFR), initially as an executive agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food; later the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Cefas provides consultancy services and expert advice, and undertakes research, in fisheries science and management, aquaculture, fish and shellfish hygiene, disease control and diagnosis, and experimental monitoring and environmental quality assessment.
