Description: |
1 item (enclosure to General Sir John Ligonier's despatch of 31 March 1744/45) extracted from SP 87/16. Plan of the western fortifications at Ostend, Flanders (now in Belgium), showing a proposed canal and locks joining the sea to the 'Creque de S te Catherine' as a means of combatting the effect of shifting sand against the fortifications. Bastions named. Scale: 10.2 cm to 200 toises. The plan was accompanied by 'Reflexions sur l'inconvenient des Sables qui comblent les Fortifications de la Ville d'Ostende' (SP 87/16 folios 93-95). A draft letter of 26 March 1745 (old style) from the Earl of Harrington to Ligonier shows that he had 'laid the whole before the King'. The plan is annotated: 'Receiv'd with Lord Harrington's Lre to y e Mã Gen 1 dated 28 Mar. 1745'. The Master General of the day was the Duke of Montagu. |
