Details of MPG 1/801
Reference: MPG 1/801
Description:

2 items extracted from CO 23/3 (ff. 105, 106, 107, 108v). (1) Note reading 'NB If a Draught of the Harbour should be wanted, that sent to the Lords of the Admiralty by Captain Gascoyne may be had'. (2) A large sheet with 4 pencil sections of the hill behind Nassau, Bahamas, showing elevations of the Governor's house, Fort Nassau, the Church etc. Scale: 1 inch to 50 ft. Dimensions: (1) 7.5 cm x 18.5 cm; (2) 37.3 cm x 141.5 cm.

Date: [1733]
Arrangement:

It is not certain that MPG 1/801/1 belongs with MPG 1/801/2, or that it was even taken from the same volume (CO 23/3). The name Gascoyne is not mentioned in the text of the relevant entry in the Calendar of State Papers, Colonial, America and West Indies 1734-1735, nor does a keyword search of the entire text of the Calendar of State Papers, Colonial, America and West Indies on CD-Rom produce a matching entry for it. A search in the index of the 1734-1735 volume of the calendar under Bahamas, Nassau, or harbour also fails to find a relevant entry. The conclusion must be that the association of item (1) with item (2) was very likely incorrect. According to both Maps and Plans in the Public Record Office: 2. America and West Indies, ed P A Penfold (London, 1974), entry 3116 and Calendar of State Papers Colonial, America and West Indies 1734-1735 p 387 item 490 (i), MPG 1/801/2 comprises folios 105, 106, 107 and 108v of CO 23/3. However, an examination of CO 23/3 reveals that only 106 and 107 are absent from the sequence of folios. The dummy sheet in the volume refers only to folios 106 and 107 as having been extracted. Within CO 23/3 the sequence of folios present runs 105, 108, dummy sheet referring to 106 and 107 as having been extracted to MPG 1/801, 109. Nevertheless, both MPG 1/801/1 and MPG 1/801/2 bear modern pencil references 'ff 106, 107'. An examination of MPG 1/801/2 shows that it consists of at least two separate sheets mounted on the same backing sheet.
