Administrative / biographical background: |
These rough docket books seem to take their origin from the introduction of the wafer seal and the need to differentiate it from great seal applications. The wafer seal was introduced in February 1878, and its use subsequently extended. Since 1916 only patents for peerages and baronetcies, judges and the law officers of the Crown, as well as royal assents to episcopal elections, remain on parchment with the great seal affixed. |
