This series contains registered files of the Board of Trade and the Department of Trade and Industry.
The files in this series cover a wide range of subjects and establishment and staff matters. Files selected cover topics such as staffing and grading, training, accommodation, office services and general management. There are files covering staff inspection reports, and the functions and structure of departments and divisions. Some files relate to HM Coastguard, whilst others concern the co-ordination of a departmental response to cases raised by the Parliamentary Commissioner for Administration (the Ombudsman).
An E prefix had been used for policy files of the Establishment Department, and its successor Division, from 1865 to 1951, the last registered number being 59849. But from 1951 files were raised (and probably re-registered) with the prefix EG, starting at 1 with the last number being 18468. Then, in 1966, the E prefix was again used, continuing the numerical sequence from the EG prefix. It was realised in 1970 that file numbers were being duplicated and, as a result, the numbers 30001 to 60000 were not issued.
This series also includes the files of an annual series initiated in the early 1960's to cover more ephemeral matters.
Most of the departments' files in the E and EG series up to 1960 are in BT 13. Thereafter, they are mostly in BT 296 but there is some overlap.
