The Friendly Societies Commission was set up in 1992, following the passing of the Building Societies Act 1992. Its functions were to promote the protection by each friendly society of its funds, to promote financial stability of friendly societies generally, to ensure that the purposes of each friendly society are in conformity with the Act and any other enactment regulating the purposes of friendly societies, to administer the system of regulation of activities of friendly societies, and to advise government on matters relating to friendly societies.

By the terms of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (Mutual Societies) Order, SI 2001/2617 all regulation of the financial affairs of mutual societies was transferred to the Financial Services Authority, and the Friendly Societies Commission was abolished.
