Administrative / biographical background:

The Building Societies Commission was set up in 1986, following the passing of the Building Societies Act 1986. Its functions were to promote the protection of depositors' and shareholders' investments, to promote financial stability of building societies generally, to ensure that the principal purpose of building societies should remain the raising of funds for making advances to members secured on land for residential use, to administer the operation of the Act, and to advise government on matters relating to building societies.

By the terms of the Financial Services and Markets Act 2000 (Mutual Societies) Order, SI 2001/2617 all regulation of the financial affairs of mutual societies was transferred to the Financial Services Authority, and the Building Societies Commission was abolished.
