This series contains ministers' papers from the Private Office of the Department of Health and Social Security and its predecessors.

The files concern policy development and implementation discussed within the Private Office and cover a whole range of social issues, including the effects of immigration on benefits, wage stop, national minimum wage, earnings related benefits, and reconstruction of National Insurance. They include reports commissioned and minutes of meetings arranged by senior officers and ministers.

Although the earliest papers are dated 1952 it was not until 1970 that the decision was taken to register these files and the MP series was created for them.
