Title: Ministry of Social Security and Department of Health and Social Security: Codes of Instructions
Description:

Departmental instructions for the Ministry of Social Security and the Department of Health and Social Security on social security procedures which were incorporated into official codes after 1968. Some originated as circulars in predecessor departments.

Official instructions on the department's varied social security procedures are usually issued first in the form of circulars whose role is generally only temporary. In due course the contents of circulars are incorporated into the more permanent codes.

For ease of updating, codes were originally held in loose-leaf binders to which amendments, serially numbered in order of issue, were added. A form in the binder was used to record the date on which each new amendment was incorporated and it is from this that the dates quoted in the list are derived.

Date: 1965-1984
Arrangement:

The different codes are commonly referred to by titles made up of one or more initial letters and have been listed on that basis. The longer, formal titles, sometimes abbreviated, are also quoted.
