The Roads Division was created in 1968 with the new Welsh Office. It had responsibility in Wales for: road transport policy; oversight of motorway and trunk road new construction and improvement; land acquisition and management; noise insulation and compensation claims; contracts and agreements; general standards; signing; lighting; communications; technical approval of bridges; road safety; trunk road forward programme; planning; traffic studies and statistics; control of development near trunk roads; advice on road and bridge matters, and responsibility for major road improvements. It worked closely with the Professional and Consultative Staff Unit who were responsible for the practical work. The latter Unit comprised Engineering Inspectors, Road Engineers, Project Planners, Quantity Surveyors, Architects, Road Safety Experts, Road Planners, Research Officers, Estate Officers and Legal Advisers. |
