Administrative / biographical background:

Following the setting up of the Welsh Office in 1965, the Welsh Divisional Road Engineer changed his name to Chief Road Engineer, and his office became part of the Transport and Highways Group. The functions remained the same. The office was responsible for most matters relating to the construction, maintenance and management of principal and trunk roads within Wales.
