This series contains files of the Ministry of Aviation's Aviation Economic Planning and General Policy Division and its successor at the Board of Trade, the Aviation Economics and Aircraft Branch 4. The records concern studies on the economic aspects of air transport including Concorde (and other matters relating to the early development of Concorde and its commercial prospects), advice on civil aircraft problems, tariffs for carriage by air of passengers, mail and freight and issues relating to the collection and dissemination of information about national and international civil aviation matters.

Includes papers relating to the introduction of in-flight entertainment on the Pam American Airline.

Administrative / biographical background:

Known previously as the Aviation Economics and Aircraft Branch in the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation (MTCA). Its work generally involved the following areas of concern: creating, analysing and appraising studies of the economic aspects of air transport involving air services, traffic aircraft and ground services; providing economic appraisals of the estimates, accounts and operating proposals of the airways corporations; advising on contemporary civil aircraft problems; estimating tariffs for the carriage by air of passengers, mail and freight; collecting, analysing and presenting statistical data relating to civil aviation and furnishing economic advice on questions of policy.
