This series contains registered files of the Audit Inspectorate and its predecessor, the Chief Inspector of Audit, within the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Housing and Local Government and the Department of the Environment. The files cover a wide range of the inspectorate's responsibilities including reports of the Chief Inspector, special audit enquiries and papers relating to the Royal Commission on Standards of Conduct in Public Life and the Committee of Enquiry into Local Government Finance. The files relate to local government finance, particularly the audit of the accounts of specific local authorities, the implementation of the Housing Finance Act 1972 and the creation of the Audit Commission for England and Wales. The series includes some earlier files which were re-registered into the AUD series from the CIA series. |
