This series consists of general assize commissions from 1921 to 1971 (the majority are from 1944 onwards). The series also includes one special commission from 1872.

The commissions in this series are the only modern ones known to have survived despite the Report of the Committee on Legal Records (Cmd 3084) of 1966 (Denning Report) recommending their permanent preservation (p 46).
