Apart from a 17th century writ of summons and a letter of 1919 concerning the extension of the Nottingham City boundary, these Midland Circuit papers are precedents, letter books, etc. arising from the work of the court during the second half of the 19th century, including two documents received from the British Records Association in 1941, setting out details of returns etc. of writs in civil actions at Northampton Assizes in 1852. The bulk of the series consists of notes and letters of Arthur Duke Coleridge (1830-1913), deputy clerk of assize and clerk of arraigns for the Midland Circuit (1856-1876) and clerk of assize for the same circuit (1876-1913). He was the great nephew of the poet, Samuel Taylor Coleridge. |
