Administrative / biographical background:

The National Gallery, which houses a permanent collection of western painting from the 13th to the 20th century, was founded in 1824 following a parliamentary grant for the purchase and exhibition of the Angerstein collection of pictures.

In 1859 the British collections at the National Gallery were removed to South Kensington, returning to Trafalgar Square after the galleries there were enlarged in 1876. An extension to the north of the building was opened in 1975 and the Sainsbury wing was opened in 1991.
