Administrative / biographical background:

The Air Component was formed on 22 April 1940 under Group Captain M Moore. Its original task was to control Allied air operations in Central and Northern Norway against the German offensive. By the time that the Headquarters of the Component sailed on 7 May their field of activity was confined to the Narvik area. Units attached to the Component played an important part in the capture from the Germans and the destruction of port facilities at Narvik. After giving air protection to the withdrawing British, French and Norwegian forces the last units of the Component left Norway on 7 June 1940.
