Administrative / biographical background:

The Royal Commission on Ancient and Historical Monuments in Wales and Monmouthshire was established in August 1908, under the chairmanship of Sir John Rhys, to make an inventory of ancient and historical monuments in Wales and Monmouthshire and specify those which seemed most worthy of preservation. Subsequent royal warrants have provided for its continuing existence. As with the Royal Commission on Historical Monuments (England), it has no powers to implement its recommendations. It is also responsible for the National Monuments Record for Wales, which maintains a photographic library and an index of architectural records in public and private possession.

In 1974 the Commission was renamed the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales.
