Administrative / biographical background:

Yarrow Admiralty Research Department (YARD) was an attempt to improve research on naval propulsion machinery following experience in the Second World War. The organisation was set up in 1946 and consisted of engineers from Yarrow and Co. Ltd. and English Electric Co. Ltd who, together with representatives of the Engineer-in-Chief's Department, produced recommendations for the improvement of propulsion machinery design. In 1949 English electric staff left the team in order to allow them to bid for turbine work on which the team had been employed. YARD continues to provide the Navy Department with authoritative technical advice on naval machinery as well as taking responsibility for the construction of prototype machinery.
