The Directorate was one of the three directorates established on the formation of the Royal Naval Scientific Service in 1946. It was originally called the Directorate of Aeronautical and Engineering Research (DAER), and was responsible not only for these subjects but also the whole field of chemistry and metallurgy. The Directorate was renamed Engineering and Materials Research (DEMR) and became the Directorate of Materials Research in 1959 (DMR or DMR(N)). The Directorate also provided headquarters direction for the Admiralty Materials Laboratory (AML) at Holton Heath. |
