This series contains administrative files concerning HM Dockyard (Chatham), many of which originate from the Office of the Captain of Chatham Dockyard. They cover such subjects as dockyard organisation and staffing, accident enquiries, the refitting and launching of particular vessels, royal visits, arrangements for the closure of the dockyard in 1984, and forward planning for preservation of the site as an Historic Royal Dockyard. The files include minutes of meetings of the Chatham Joint Production Committee and the Whitley Committee, as well as committees responsible for the closure and future preservation of the site. |

HM Dockyard (Chatham) was established as a royal dockyard by Elizabeth I in 1567 - there is reference to it being used as a harbour for ships from at least 1547. It’s main purpose was for the building of ships for the Royal Navy, including the original HMS Victory, although it did conduct refitting as well. The site closed in 1984 and is now a visitor attraction, under the care of the Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust. |
