The Admiralty Engineering Laboratory originated in two separate departments, the Mechanical Engineering Department founded in 1917 and the Electrical Engineering Department set up in 1919. In 1920 they moved to the Sonic Works at West Drayton to form the Admiralty Engineering Laboratory, though they remained two distinct departments, dealing respectively with engineering and electrical problems, and responsible to the engineer-in-chief and the director of electrical engineering. In 1964 the control of the laboratory was vested in Director General Ships at Bath and so remained until it became part of the National Gas Turbine Establishment in 1977. |
