Administrative / biographical background:

The i-uk website was launched in October 2002 in response to research commissioned by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), in conjunction with Invest UK, Trade Partners UK, the British Tourist Authority and the British Council, into what overseas visitors want and need to know about the UK. It was intended as a gateway to the United Kingdom's business, tourism, educational and cultural resources and the website was developed to offer access to this information and to related services. The site was closed down in 2008, by which time it was led by the FCO in co-operation with British Trade International, VisitBritain and the British Council.
