Administrative / biographical background:

The Meat and Livestock Commission was established on 1 October 1967 under the Agriculture Act 1967. It was responsible for improving the production, marketing and distribution of beef, sheep meat and pig meat in Great Britain, and for increasing demand for British meat. It was wound–up on 31 March 2008 as part of a re-organisation of levy boards by the British Government and its responsibilities transferred into a new levy board structure operating as the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).
