Administrative / biographical background:

The Post Conflict Reconstruction Unit (PCRU) was established at the end of 2004 as a tri-departmental Unit of the Ministry of Defence (MOD), Department for International Development (DFID) and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO), with the DFID Permanent Secretary accountable for staffing and financial issues. The aim of the PCRU was to provide specialist, targeted assistance in countries emerging from violent conflict where the UK is helping to achieve a stable environment that will enable longer term development to take place. On 7 December 2007, the PCRU changed its name to the Stabilisation Unit.
