The Serious Fraud Office (SFO) was established in April 1988 as a new independent organisation responsible for the detection, investigation and prosecution of serious fraud cases. The Office and its powers were created under the Criminal Justice Act 1987. The Director of the SFO is appointed by and accountable to the Attorney General.
