Description:

Folios 181-182. A letter from inhabitants, dated at Whitehaven [Cumberland], requesting arms to defend against attacks [such as the one recently mounted from the American Patriot privateer 'Ranger', under the command of John Paul Jones out of Brest, France]. Endorsed with a refusal from the Board [of Ordnance] on the grounds of there being no garrison to lodge them securely.
