Description:

Folios 16-19. Note dated at Bow Street from Sir John Fielding to Mr [William] Eden [Under Secretary of State to Lord Suffolk] reporting on the meeting of publicans at the 'Brown Bear and Rummer' Westminster and in light of a resolution of some of them to raise the price of beer to four pence a quart 'on Monday next' advising that Suffolk immediately writes to Sir John Hawkins and to Fielding to call the magistrates together to prevent any disturbances that may result from the publicans' resolution. With the note is enclosed (folio 17) a printed letter of invitation to attend the meeting the subject of Sir John's report. There is a handwritten note that the letters were delivered by Lane and Evers the two Beadles of St Margaret's parish [i.e. minor officials dealing with petty offences] by direction of Mr Bowman of the 'Bell' the corner of New Tothill Street. Folio 19. Further note from Sir John to Mr Eden suggesting that a letter be sent to Mr [John] Sherwood, a Justice of the Peace at Shadwell, or to Justice Pell to ask that they enquire about a proposed meeting of publicans at the 'Angel' at Whitechapel and dissuade the landlord from allowing it.
