Administrative / biographical background:

English Heritage's Historic Settlements and Landscapes Advisory Committee (HSLAC) was established in 2001 and took on responsibilities previously exercised by the Ancient Monuments Advisory Committee and the Historic Buildings and Areas Advisory Committee.

The committee's remit was to advise the Commission and English Heritage staff on the exercise of its functions relating to settlements and landscapes, and to the identification and understanding of the historic environment, including:

  • a) Policy and standards relating to identification and understanding
  • b) Reviews and reports on the state of the historic environment
  • c) Programmes and projects for the identification, designation, recording, investigation and analysis of the historic environment and for the preparation of the resulting records, syntheses, reports and publications including associated research into techniques and priorities
  • d) The planning and commissioning of archaeological and historical research and associated statutory consents
  • e) Applications of proposals affecting settlements or landscapes including designation, statutory consent, grants and acquisition or guardianship by English Heritage.

In 2003 the committee was replaced by the new English Heritage Advisory Committee, which took over the responsibilities of the HSLAC and the Historic Built Environment Advisory Committee.
