On 3 December 1999 Lord Hunt, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, established an Independent Confidential Inquiry under the provisions of Section 2 National Health Service Act 1977. The purpose was to investigate the removal, retention and disposal of human organs and tissues following post mortem examination at Alder Hey. The Inquiry published its findings on 30 January 2001. The North West Regional Office were involved in the practicalities around the setting up of the Inquiry and facilitating accommodation, as Alder Hey sat within their region. The Private Office within the North West Regional Office, would have been the liaison point between Inquiry team and Ministers and would have carried out the associated administrative function for the Inquiry. |
