The Healthcare Commission was a non-departmental public body, created on 1 April 2004, sponsored by the Department of Health. The Commission was the independent inspection body for both the NHS and independent healthcare in England and Wales. On 31 March 2009, the Healthcare Commission merged with the Commission for Social Care Inspection and the Mental Health Act Commission to form the new Care Quality Commission.
