Administrative / biographical background:

These records were created during the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys' Longitudinal Study (LS) of England and Wales. The LS contains linked census and life events data for a 1% sample of the population of England and Wales. It contains records on over 500,000 people usually resident in England and Wales at each point in time, and it is largely representative of the whole population. The LS is the largest longitudinal data resource in England and Wales

The Office of Population Censuses and Surveys (OPCS) was created in May 1970 through the merger of the General Register Office and the Government Social Survey Department.

In 1996 OPCS was combined with UK Central Statistical Office to become the Office for National Statistics.
