Emmanuel SHINWELL: British. First came to attention as a pacifist and trade union activist in the First World War. An active Labour MP, trade unionist and speaker at anti-fascist rallies in the 1930s, SHINWELL was described in 1943 as one of only two supporters of the Communist Party on the Labour Party National Executive. He regularly met Harry POLLITT, the Communist Party leader, during the war and was said by POLLITT to have taken political advice from him on occasions
