Description:

Printed prize appeal from the Vice-Admiralty Court of Gibraltar.

Captured ship: William and Mary (master Jacob Smith).

Nationality: American.

History: bound from Wilmington, North Carolina to Cadiz, laden with tobacco and turpentine; taken on 4 January 1815 by HMS Reynard (David St Clair commanding), and brought into Gibraltar.

Appellant: William Humphrey Nevett of Messrs Thomas Dickenson and Co, merchant of London, on behalf of the Spanish Ambassador, claiming the ship and cargo as having been taken in Spanish waters.

Respondent: The captor and HMPG.

Bound printed appeal with manuscript decree of 29 January 1818 (folios 150-167) [no folio 161].

Decision: further proofs insufficient; ship and cargo condemned as lawful prize of the captor.
