Description:

Printed prize appeal from the Vice-Admiralty Court of Bermuda.

Captured ship: Hope brig (master Robert Pringle).

Nationality: British.

History: bound from Glasgow to Buenos Aires, laden with planks, coals, boxes of merchandise, but on the first night of the voyage took on smuggled gunpowder and bullets at Wemyss Bay from Messrs McFarquhar, Campbell and Co; taken by Americans and recaptured on 28 February 1815 by HMS Hebrus (Edmund Palmer commanding), and brought into Bermuda.

Appellant: Edmund Palmer, recaptor and HMPG.

Archibald Shedden merchant of Bermuda, on behalf of Messrs McFarquhar, Campbell and Co, merchants of Glasgow for part of the cargo.

Bound printed appeal with manuscript decree of 17 July 1817 (folios 492-505).

Decision: against the appeal.
