Description:

Printed prize appeal from the Vice-Admiralty Court of Newfoundland.

Captured ship: Deux Freres (master Jean Miguel Perez).

Nationality: French.

History: bound from St Jean de Luz, Bayonne to Port aux Choix, in the Newfoundland fisheries, laden with salt and staves; taken on 7 August 1815 by HMS Hazard (John Cooksley commanding), and brought into St John's, Newfoundland.

Appellant: William Mellish merchant of London, for the ship and cargo as the property of Alexis and Alexandre Betbeder, merchants of Bayonne and [British] subjects.

Respondent: The captor and HMPG.

Bound printed appeal with manuscript decree of 12 June 1817 (folios 472-480).

Decision: ship and cargo restored on payment of the captor's expenses.
