Description:

Printed prize appeal from the Vice-Admiralty Court of the Cape of Good Hope.

Captured ship: Sao Joaquim (master Vincente Thomas Dos Santos).

Nationality: Portuguese.

History: a slave trader, bound from Mozambique to Maranhao, Brazil, laden with 350 enslaved people, elephant's teeth [ivory], tortoiseshell and black wood; taken on 8 February 1815 by HMS Cumberland (Thomas Baber commanding), and brought into the Cape of Good Hope.

Appellant: The master on behalf of Joaquim, Joze da Sequira, Thomas Antonio, himself and others, all Portuguese subjects.

Respondent: The captor.

Bound printed appeal with manuscript decree of 8 May 1817 (folios 406-420).

Decision: ship and slaves to be restored as claimed.
