Description:

Printed prize appeal from the Vice-Admiralty Court of the Bahamas.

Captured ship: Hercules (master James Rae).

Nationality: American.

History: as a British ship, was bound from Cork to Jamaica; taken on 25 February 1815 (just before the ratification of the peace treaty) by the American privateer Hollins (William S Stockett commanding), retaken on 9 March 1815 by HMS Canso (James Croke commanding), and brought into Nassau, New Providence.

Appellant: James Strachan Glennie merchant of London on behalf of William S Stockett and the Hollins.

Respondent: James Croke and HMS Canso, and Alexander Gordon and John Thompson, merchants of New Providence on behalf of the original British owners.

Bound printed appeal with manuscript decree of 1 May 1817 (folios 370-377).

Decision: captured ship was legally in the possession of the American privateer as a prize of war; to be restored, subject to payment of the captor's expenses.
