Description:

Printed prize appeal from the Vice-Admiralty Court of Sierra Leone.

Captured ship: Amelia (also known as Billy) (master Alexander Campbell).

Nationality: American, sailing under Portuguese colours.

History: a slave trader, found at sea in May 1811 off the coast of Sierra Leone in distress, with the enslaved people having risen and taken over the ship; taken by the merchant brig Kitty of Liverpool (John Roach commanding), with the later aid of HMS Tigress (Robert Bones commanding) and brought into Sierra Leone.

Appellant: Roach, the captor's claim for salvage and considerable expenditure incurred in attempting to save the lives of the dying slaves, by providing food (listed).

Respondent: Bones, and the Crown.

Bound printed appeal with manuscript decree of 3 April 1817 (folios 310-312).

Decision: matters to stand for the present, appearance having been made by Roach's widow (Roach having been murdered off the coast of Africa on a Spanish slaver).
