Description:

Printed prize appeal from the Vice-Admiralty Court of Jamaica.

Captured ship: Ottawa (master James Simpson).

Nationality: British.

History: bound from Liverpool to Jamaica, laden with porter, soap, potatoes, hams, cheese etc; taken on 9 March 1815 off Cuba by the American privateer Kemp (Joseph Almeda commanding), retaken on 3 April 1815 by HMS Moselle (John Moberly commanding) and HMS Anaconda (George A Westphall commanding) and brought into Jamaica.

Appellant: James Strachan Glennie merchant of London on behalf of the Kemp of Baltimore and Joseph Almeda, arguing on the treaty period for restitution of captures.

Bound printed appeal with manuscript decree of 27 March 1817 (folios 297-309).

Decision: ship and cargo restored as lawful prize of Glennie, subject to payment of British captors' expenses.
